Taiwan, island in East Asia, located about 160 km (100 miles) off the southeastern coast of China, across the Taiwan Strait. It covers 36,197 square km (13,974 square miles), bordered by the East China Sea to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the South China Sea to the southwest.The island features rugged mountains in the east, fertile plains in the west, and a humid subtropical to tropical climate. Major natural attractions include Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake, and Kenting National Park.Founded with Austronesian settlements and later influenced by Chinese, Japanese, and Western powers, Taiwan has developed into a modern, industrialized society. Its capital, Taipei, is a hub of culture and commerce, famous for landmarks such as Taipei 101 and vibrant night markets.
